Moscow Airport Shut Down After Suspected Ukrainian Drone Attack

One of Moscow’s main airports was temporarily shut down following a drone attack, which Russian authorities claim was launched by Ukraine. The announcement was made by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.

According to Sobyanin, the drones were intercepted by air defense systems, but air traffic was suspended as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety.

Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency confirmed the temporary closure, citing “an air security threat” as the reason. While the specific airport was not mentioned in the initial reports, Russian media suggested that the closure involved either Vnukovo or Domodedovo Airport.

This is not the first time drones have targeted the Russian capital in recent months.

Ahead of the Victory Day Parade on May 9, 2025, which will mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Russian authorities have reportedly deployed 280 additional air defense systems to Moscow.

According to military journalist Andriy Tsaplienko, air defense units were transferred from other regions, including Kazan and Grozny. Moscow’s defense grid has been structured in several layers, incorporating radar detection, interception capabilities, and electronic warfare systems.

The Ukrainian government has not issued any official statement regarding the incident.
