U.S. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the United States will suspend airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen following a message from the Iran-backed group expressing its desire to end hostilities.
“The Houthis informed us that they no longer want to fight,” Trump said. “We will respect that and stop bombing them. We’ll take their word — they say they won’t attack our ships anymore, and that’s the reason we were striking them.”
Trump emphasized that the U.S. is open to de-escalation when the other side signals a willingness to step back from conflict. Over the past several months, U.S. forces have repeatedly targeted Houthi infrastructure in Yemen, responding to attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea.
While the president’s statement suggests a potential pause in hostilities, regional analysts caution that the situation remains volatile and will depend on whether both sides uphold their commitments.
