Trump: Russia and Ukraine to Begin Ceasefire Talks Immediately

Trump and Putin Hold Key Call: Ceasefire Talks Between Russia and Ukraine May Begin Soon

In a highly anticipated diplomatic development, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine will begin immediate negotiations to end the war. The declaration followed a two-hour phone conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier today. The call marks one of the most significant direct interventions by the Trump administration in the ongoing Eastern European conflict.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I believe the call was a good one. Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations for a ceasefire and to end the war.” He clarified that the negotiations will be fully led by Russia and Ukraine, without the involvement of a third-party mediator, though he noted that the Vatican has offered to host the peace talks.

According to Trump, President Putin expressed a strong desire to restore economic relations with the United States. “Russia is interested in trading ‘big time’ with the U.S., which could benefit Ukraine as well,” Trump stated. This unexpected economic incentive is being interpreted by analysts as a potential opening to a broader de-escalation strategy in the region.

While details of the proposed negotiations remain unclear, Trump’s announcement has already sparked reactions across diplomatic circles. Some European leaders welcomed the news cautiously, while others questioned whether Russia’s intentions are genuine or merely strategic.

Putin, for his part, has not issued a formal public statement, but sources in the Kremlin confirmed the conversation took place and described it as “constructive.” Russian state media emphasized the mutual interest in resuming economic cooperation and reducing tensions on the battlefield.

If successful, this development could mark a turning point in a war that has taken thousands of lives and displaced millions. However, observers remain wary of premature optimism, noting that previous peace initiatives have repeatedly failed amid ongoing violence and mistrust.

For now, all eyes are on whether both Kyiv and Moscow will accept the terms of the proposed dialogue—and whether the Trump administration will push for deeper involvement if progress stalls.
