Chancellor Merz urges President Xi Jinping to support Ukraine ceasefire

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, during which he urged Beijing to back European efforts aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Ukraine. The conversation marks a notable diplomatic move as Germany seeks to rally broader international support to end the ongoing conflict.

Merz emphasized the importance of unified global pressure on Russia, stating that a cessation of hostilities is essential for restoring stability in Europe and preventing further humanitarian deterioration. He reportedly stressed that China, as a major global actor, has both influence and responsibility in facilitating diplomatic progress.

The German chancellor’s outreach to Xi comes amid mounting calls across the European Union for a more active Chinese role in peace mediation. While China has positioned itself as a potential broker in the conflict, it has so far avoided taking explicit stances against Russia.

Officials in Berlin described the conversation as “constructive,” noting that Merz reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to a rules-based international order and encouraged dialogue among all stakeholders.

The call adds to a series of diplomatic efforts by Western leaders to involve China in de-escalation talks as the war in Ukraine continues into its third year.
