China Develops Contact Lenses That Let You See with Your Eyes Closed

Researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) have unveiled an innovative breakthrough: contact lenses capable of providing vision even when the user’s eyes are closed. The technology, which operates in the infrared spectrum, has drawn attention from military, medical, and security sectors.

The key to this innovation lies in the integration of nanomaterials within the lenses. These materials detect infrared radiation, convert it into visible signals, and transmit that visual data to the user—making it possible to perceive heat-based images even through closed eyelids. Scientists emphasize that infrared light can penetrate human skin and tissue, allowing the wearer to orient themselves in complete darkness.

During laboratory tests, volunteers were able to recognize blinking infrared signals and distinguish geometric patterns in low-light conditions. Currently, the lenses function primarily with artificial infrared sources. However, the research team is working to increase the lenses’ sensitivity so they can detect natural thermal radiation from living beings and physical objects.

The project has vast potential applications: from military reconnaissance and emergency response operations to medical diagnostics—such as early detection of inflammation or tumors based on heat changes in tissue.
