Olympic Legend Mary Lou Retton Faces DUI Charge in West Virginia

Mary Lou Retton, the first American woman to win Olympic gold in the individual all-around gymnastics competition, was arrested on May 27, 2025, in West Virginia on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

According to a statement from the Nicholas County Sheriff’s Department, Retton was pulled over late Tuesday night after officers observed erratic driving. She was taken into custody and later released on bail. Authorities confirmed that toxicology reports are pending, and a court hearing is expected in the coming weeks.

Retton, who captured the hearts of Americans during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, has not yet commented on the arrest. Her attorney also declined to provide a statement, citing the ongoing investigation.

The incident comes just months after Retton made headlines for recovering from a rare form of pneumonia that left her hospitalized in critical condition. She had received widespread support from the public, including a successful crowdfunding campaign for her medical expenses.

Legal experts told local media that a first-time DUI offense in West Virginia could carry fines, license suspension, and mandatory safety courses. Sentencing often depends on prior history and the outcome of the toxicology report.
