Crimean Bridge Under Attack Again — SBU Releases Video of Explosion

On June 3, 2025, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) announced a successful attack on the Crimean Bridge, employing 1,100 kilograms of underwater explosives to damage the structure’s supports. This marks the third Ukrainian operation targeting the bridge since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Details of the Operation

The SBU released footage of the underwater explosion, which occurred at 4:44 a.m. local time. The blast caused significant damage to the bridge’s underwater supports, leading to a temporary suspension of traffic. SBU Chief Vasyl Maliuk stated that the operation had been in planning for several months and emphasized that the bridge, used by Russia to supply its military forces, is a legitimate military target.

Russian Response

Russian authorities confirmed a temporary closure of the bridge following the explosion but reported that traffic resumed later in the day. The Russian Defense Ministry has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.

International Reactions

The attack coincided with Ukrainian officials visiting Washington to seek continued U.S. support against Russian aggression. Discussions included advocating for stronger sanctions on Russia and increased defense assistance. The timing of the bridge attack underscores Ukraine’s capability to strike strategic targets amid ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Historical Context

This operation follows previous attacks on the Crimean Bridge in October 2022 and July 2023, both resulting in significant damage and subsequent repairs by Russia. The bridge, spanning 19 kilometers over the Kerch Strait, serves as a critical logistical route for Russian military operations in southern Ukraine.
