US Raises Iraq Travel Advisory to Highest Level

On June 11, the US Department of State raised its travel advisory for Iraq to Level 4 — the highest possible level — urging American citizens to avoid all travel to the country due to escalating security threats.

According to the updated advisory, the decision was driven by a heightened risk of terrorist attacks, kidnappings, armed violence, and general instability. US citizens in Iraq may be specifically targeted by terrorist groups and anti-American militias.

Amid the deteriorating security environment, the State Department has ordered the departure of all non-emergency personnel from the US Embassy in Baghdad. Americans currently in Iraq are advised to have a personal emergency evacuation plan and not rely on US government assistance in the event of a crisis.

The advisory cites increased activity from Shiite militias, incidents involving bombings and drone attacks, and violent protests as contributing factors. The Pentagon has also expressed concern over a potential regional escalation, particularly involving Iran.

Iraqi authorities have denied that American personnel face imminent threats, asserting that the situation is under control. However, Washington views the risks differently, warning that emergency assistance may be unavailable or severely limited.

Iraq now joins the list of countries under Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisories, alongside Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Iran, and North Korea. While not a legal ban, the advisory strongly recommends that US citizens leave the country immediately and refrain from any future travel until conditions improve.
