Macron Slams Russia for Mocking Peace Overtures While Killing Civilians in Ukraine

Paris, France — French President Emmanuel Macron has issued a sharp condemnation of Russia’s continued attacks on Ukrainian cities, accusing the Kremlin of “mocking peace proposals” while carrying out deadly strikes that claim civilian lives — including children.

In a post on the social media platform X, Macron reacted to the latest wave of Russian missile strikes that occurred overnight on April 6. These attacks came on the heels of a devastating strike on the city of Kryvyi Rih on April 4, where at least 20 people were killed, including nine children.

“On this day of national mourning in Ukraine, my thoughts are with the children and all civilian victims of the deadly strikes carried out by Russia,” Macron wrote.

The French President stressed that Ukraine had fully accepted a 30-day ceasefire proposal initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump, but accused Russia of continuing its military campaign with undiminished intensity.

“These Russian strikes must end,” Macron stated. “A ceasefire must be reached as soon as possible. And there must be firm action if Russia continues to stall, trying to buy time while refusing a truce.”

He went on to question Moscow’s intentions:
“How much longer will Russia mock peace proposals from the United States and Ukraine while continuing to kill children and other civilians?”

The remarks come amid mounting frustration in European capitals over Moscow’s rejection of multiple international efforts aimed at brokering a temporary halt to the fighting. Macron’s call for a ceasefire echoes similar statements from leaders across the EU, who have urged Russia to take part in meaningful negotiations.

France has been a vocal proponent of diplomatic solutions throughout the war but has increasingly taken a harder line in recent months as civilian casualties in Ukraine continue to rise.

While the Kremlin has not formally responded to Macron’s statements, Russian officials have previously rejected Western ceasefire proposals, claiming they are designed to allow Ukraine to regroup militarily.

As Ukraine observes a day of national mourning for those killed in Kryvyi Rih, international pressure on Moscow is likely to intensify, with growing calls for a unified Western response should Russia continue its current course.
