U.S. President Donald Trump has renewed his public criticism of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell after the Fed opted to leave interest rates unchanged. In a post on Truth Social, Trump referred to Powell as “a dumb guy” and “an obvious Trump Hater,” expressing growing frustration with the central bank’s monetary policy.
“I’ve tried being nice, neutral, and nasty… Nothing works!” Trump wrote. He also questioned whether it might be time to revisit the idea of firing Powell, adding, “His term is almost up anyway.”
Trump’s remarks follow a long history of clashes with Powell, despite having appointed him in 2018 during his first term. Trump has consistently pushed for more aggressive rate cuts, accusing the Fed of holding back economic growth.
Although Trump has hinted at dismissal, Powell’s term as Fed Chair does not expire until May 2026. Moreover, Powell has previously stated that he would not resign even if asked to do so by the president. Legal experts note that firing a Fed Chair without cause would raise serious constitutional and institutional concerns.
Powell has led the Federal Reserve through multiple economic challenges since taking office in February 2018. His decision to maintain interest rates in June 2025 prompted Trump’s latest outburst.
