Iran demands emergency UN Security Council meeting after US strikes

Iran has formally requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council in response to the recent U.S. airstrikes on its nuclear facilities. The request was outlined in an official letter sent by Iran’s Permanent Mission to the UN to the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council.

“In the interest of maintaining international peace and security, the Islamic Republic of Iran urgently calls for the immediate convening of an emergency Security Council session to address this flagrant and unlawful act of aggression, to condemn it in the strongest possible terms, and to take all necessary measures in accordance with the Council’s responsibilities under the UN Charter to ensure that those responsible for these heinous crimes are held fully accountable and do not go unpunished,” the letter states.

Tehran insists that the U.S. strike constitutes a grave breach of international law and a direct assault on its sovereignty and its right to peaceful nuclear development. The statement emphasizes the necessity of holding the perpetrators accountable through legal international mechanisms.

The request follows the confirmation by President Donald Trump that U.S. forces had carried out precision strikes on three major nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. According to Trump, the mission aimed to eliminate Iran’s uranium enrichment infrastructure.
