Trump Weighs New Ukraine Military Aid Package Worth Hundreds of Millions

President Donald Trump is considering a new military aid package for Ukraine valued at several hundred million dollars, according to two sources familiar with the plan cited by Politico. This would mark the first potential U.S. assistance to Ukraine under the Trump administration, as the country continues its third year of war with Russia.

The funding would reportedly come from a drawdown authority approved by Congress in 2023 during Joe Biden’s presidency. Known as the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA), the fund allows the Department of Defense to transfer weapons from U.S. military stockpiles to Ukraine. As of July 2025, approximately $3.8 billion remains available in the fund.

Internal divisions within the administration have emerged over the proposal. Some officials support the move, while others express concern over the impact on U.S. stockpiles. These concerns mirror those voiced during the Biden administration, which also cited strain on U.S. ammunition reserves due to ongoing conflicts in both Ukraine and the Middle East.

Last month, Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg convened defense industry leaders to address these supply challenges. According to a source briefed on the meeting, Feinberg is considering submitting a proposal to Congress to allocate new funding for ammunition and has called on manufacturers to accelerate production of air defense systems and precision-guided munitions.

Separately, Politico reports that NATO allies are working on a broader agreement to purchase U.S.-made weapons for Ukraine. Kyiv has reportedly asked Washington to allow European countries to directly acquire American arms to bolster Ukraine’s defense.

In a related development, the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee approved $500 million in security assistance for Ukraine as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2026. The vote took place on July 9 and passed with overwhelming support—26 votes to 1, according to Reuters.
