In his evening address on April 7, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed for the first time that Ukrainian forces are conducting operations within Russia’s Belgorod and Kursk regions. This marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict, as Ukrainian troops extend their activities beyond national borders.
President Zelensky reported that Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi provided updates on the frontline, specifically noting Ukraine’s military presence in these Russian territories. He emphasized the strategic intent behind these operations, stating, “We continue active operations in the enemy’s border areas, and this is absolutely justified—the war must return to where it came from.”
The primary objective of these incursions is to bolster the defense of Ukraine’s Sumy and Kharkiv regions, which have been recurrent targets of Russian attacks. By engaging Russian forces on their own soil, Ukraine aims to mitigate the pressure on its border communities and disrupt enemy operations.
President Zelensky highlighted the broader impact of these actions, noting that the operations in the Kursk region have successfully diverted Russian resources, thereby alleviating pressure on other critical fronts, particularly in the Donetsk region. He underscored the importance of targeting Russian military equipment and logistics to weaken their operational capabilities.
Special recognition was given to the 225th Assault Regiment for their effective engagements in the Belgorod region. President Zelensky expressed pride in their contributions, stating, “Well done, guys! I’m proud of each and every one who is fighting for Ukraine!”
This acknowledgment represents a notable shift, as Ukrainian officials had not previously confirmed military activities within Russia’s Belgorod region. The confirmation follows reports from Russian sources in March regarding cross-border engagements and subsequent evacuations in affected areas.
By extending military operations into Russian territory, Ukraine seeks to disrupt adversary plans and enhance the security of its own regions, demonstrating a proactive approach in the ongoing conflict.
