70 Countries Seek Talks with U.S. over Trump’s New Tariffs, Treasury Confirms

In the wake of President Donald Trump’s recent tariff implementations, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed that approximately 70 countries have reached out to the United States to discuss these trade measures. Speaking on Fox News, Bessent emphasized that these nations aim to “restore balance in global trade.”

Bessent highlighted Japan’s proactive approach, noting that the country responded promptly to the tariff announcements. He stated, “Japan is a very important military ally, a very important economic ally, and the U.S. has a lot of history with them. But this is going to be a very busy period, and if President Trump secures maximum negotiating leverage, and once he achieves maximum influence, he will be ready to start negotiations.”

On April 2, 2025, President Trump announced a 10% tariff on all imported goods, with additional higher tariffs for specific countries—34% for China and 20% for the European Union. These measures have raised concerns among international partners about potential inflation and economic slowdown.

China has expressed its intent to counteract the U.S. tariffs, emphasizing that there are no victors in trade wars. Chinese officials have indicated that the recent U.S. tariff actions do not foster constructive dialogue between the two nations.

Meanwhile, Japan has appointed Economy Minister Ryosei Akazawa to lead trade negotiations with the United States. This decision follows a conversation between Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and President Trump, during which they agreed to initiate bilateral discussions on tariffs.

The international community is closely monitoring these developments, as the newly imposed tariffs have introduced volatility in global markets and prompted nations to seek negotiations to mitigate potential economic impacts.
