U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to issue an executive order
requiring voters to present identification at the polls without exception.
In a post on Truth Social, he emphasized that all voting must be done with
paper ballots and that electronic machines will be removed from the process.
Trump also said that mail-in voting should be eliminated, except for members
of the military stationed abroad and seriously ill citizens. According to him,
this format would guarantee transparency and election integrity.
This is not the president’s first initiative in this area. Back in March,
his administration promoted measures requiring proof of citizenship when
registering for federal elections. At the time, experts pointed out that such
steps could contradict the law, since election rules in the United States
are regulated by the states and Congress.
Opponents of the initiative warn that stricter requirements will limit access
to voting for millions of Americans who do not have a passport or a Real ID.
Obtaining such documents can be costly and bureaucratically complex. In addition,
moving exclusively to paper ballots, according to experts, could slow down the
counting process and increase the risk of errors.
Despite the criticism, Trump insists that strict control of the voting process
is the only way to protect the country from fraud. His statements once again
bring back into the spotlight the 2020 election, which he continues to claim
was stolen through voter fraud.
