The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has requested NASA to terminate the two climate-monitoring satellite missions. These satellites, known as the Orbiting Carbon Observatories, gather data on carbon dioxide concentrations and crop health, which are used by scientists, farmers, and oil and gas companies.
Both missions are equipped with identical measuring instruments: one is mounted on a standalone satellite, while the other operates on the International Space Station. If the missions are ended, the standalone satellite will burn up in the atmosphere.
The reasons behind the Trump administration’s decision to shut down the projects remain unclear. Scientists emphasize that the satellite equipment is modern and capable of operating for many more years, providing crucial data for studying greenhouse gases and global warming.
