OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is in talks to build a large-scale data center in India. According to Bloomberg, the facility’s capacity could be at least 1 gigawatt, making it one of the largest in the country.
The project will be part of the $500 billion Stargate global infrastructure initiative, which already covers the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. In India, the data center could play a key role in the development of artificial intelligence in Asian markets. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is expected to announce plans for the construction during a visit to the country in September.
In terms of investment, the project is comparable to initiatives by Microsoft, Google, and Indian giant Reliance Industries. India has already become a priority destination for AI infrastructure due to the absence of US restrictions on Nvidia chip supplies and the $1.2 billion state program IndiaAI.
OpenAI is simultaneously developing data centers in the US (together with SoftBank and Oracle), Norway, and Abu Dhabi. In India itself, the company is preparing to launch an office in New Delhi, forming a team, and offering special products for local users, including a ChatGPT Plus subscription for $5 per month.
Experts note that the Indian data center will not only strengthen OpenAI’s position in Asia, but will also become an important element of international competition in the field of artificial intelligence.
