Students at Texas A&M University have unveiled a unique drone weighing a mere 112 grams. It can be folded to the size of a smartphone and unfolds automatically in just a few seconds after launch.
The pocket-sized drone, developed at the Advanced Vertical Flight Laboratory (AVFL), can be carried in a bag or even a pocket. To launch it, a user simply tosses the device into the air. The propellers automatically deploy, lock into place, and stabilize the aircraft.
According to the developers, the compact MAV (Micro Air Vehicle) could be useful not only for civilian users, for tasks like aerial photography or building inspections, but also for military applications that require a lightweight and mobile reconnaissance tool. In emergency situations, such a drone could help quickly survey hard-to-reach areas.
