From expensive islands and harsh beaches to closed hotels in the low season—what you need to know before you go.
Many people associate Greece with summer holidays by the sea, but the country is also perfect for autumn travel. During this time, it gets cooler, there are fewer tourists, and prices gradually drop. But, as experts at Travel Off Path warn, poor planning can ruin a holiday.
Experts highlighted four main mistakes to avoid:
- Combining islands without considering prices. Tourists often visit Mykonos and Santorini back-to-back, known for high prices and crowds. Instead, it’s better to combine expensive islands with less popular neighbours—you can save money and see more of authentic Greece.
- Choosing unsuitable islands for beach holidays. For example, Santorini or Chios are not ideal for swimming: their beaches are too harsh. For an autumn beach holiday, it’s better to go to Crete.
- Unexpected roaming charges. Some islands located close to Turkey (Kos, Rhodes, Kastellorizo) may “switch” the mobile network to Turkish roaming, leading to a high bill.
- Ignoring the low season. Most hotels, restaurants, and cruise routes on popular islands close from November. Therefore, experts advise planning trips before the start of winter.
Thus, a smart choice of itinerary and travel time will allow you to enjoy Greece during the shoulder season without unnecessary expenses or disappointment
