American biologist Scott Travers has named the box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) the world’s deadliest marine creature. Its transparent tentacles and potent venom can kill up to 100 people a year, while its 24 eyes help it navigate and avoid obstacles in the water.
American biologist Scott Travers stated that the most dangerous sea creature is the box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri), which has 24 eyes and transparent tentacles that can reach up to three meters in length. Forbes reported this finding.
Unlike sharks, which cause only a few deaths annually, the box jellyfish can kill up to 100 people per year. Its venom, which contains thousands of microscopic nematocysts, instantly enters the victim’s body, causing severe inflammation, dermonecrosis, shortness of breath, blood pressure disruption, and even cardiovascular collapse.
A startling feature of the box jellyfish is its 24 eyes, clustered into four sensory groups around its bell. These include pit eyes, slit eyes, and more complex lensed eyes with a lens, cornea, and retina, allowing the jellyfish to form optical images, orient itself in the water, and navigate around obstacles.
The box jellyfish’s transparent body makes it virtually invisible in the water, which, combined with its powerful venom, makes it extremely dangerous to humans. Survivors of stings describe intolerable pain and long-term skin effects, including scarring.
