OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that the development of artificial intelligence could lead to massive automation and job cuts, especially in customer support and programming sectors.
The development of artificial intelligence is capable of radically changing the labor market and replacing humans in many professions. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, discussed this in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson.
According to Altman, AI could take over the duties of employees providing customer support via phone or computer within the next few years. “I’m confident a lot of those people are going to lose their jobs, and that artificial intelligence is going to do that function better,” he noted.
The expert stressed that historically, about half of all jobs change every 75 years, but the adoption of AI could significantly accelerate these processes, giving people less time to adapt.
Altman expressed particular concern for professionals in programming and development, whose jobs could also be threatened by automation. At the same time, professions involving direct human contact—such as elderly care or teaching—are less vulnerable to the impact of AI.
The head of OpenAI admitted that the responsibility for the future of workers sometimes keeps him up at night, noting the sheer scale of the potential changes in the labor market.
