Nobel Week kicks off in Sweden and Norway, an annual event during which the Nobel Committee announces the winners of the prestigious prize for outstanding achievements in science, literature and peace. This was reported by the Nobel Foundation website.
Traditionally, the week will begin with the announcement of the winners in the field of physiology or medicine – their names will be announced on Monday, 6 October.
On Tuesday, the winners in the ‘physics’ category will be announced, on Wednesday – in chemistry, and on Thursday – in literature.
The week will conclude on Friday, 10 October, when the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced in Oslo, Norway.
The winner of the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences will be announced on 13 October in Stockholm.
The Nobel Prize, established in 1895 in accordance with the will of dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel, is awarded for outstanding scientific research, revolutionary inventions and significant contributions to the development of society and culture.
This year, the prize is worth 11 million Swedish kronor (about $1.2 million). The winners will also receive an 18-carat gold medal and a diploma.
The award ceremony will be held, as usual, on 10 December at Stockholm City Hall, on the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
