Dietitian Recommends Simple Snack That May Help Prevent Cancer

A nutrition expert has brought renewed attention to a surprisingly simple snack that may play a role in cancer prevention: a mixture of low-fat cottage cheese and flaxseed oil. The combination, which originated from the research of German biochemist Johanna Budwig in the 1950s, is once again gaining popularity among health-conscious individuals and specialists alike.

According to the dietitian, this snack is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, high-quality protein, and lignans—plant compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Together, these ingredients support cellular function, reduce oxidative stress, and may help suppress processes linked to cancer development.

“Flaxseed oil is one of the richest sources of alpha-linolenic acid, a type of omega-3 fatty acid that’s often lacking in modern diets,” she explains. “When blended with cottage cheese, it becomes more bioavailable and easier for the body to absorb.”

Studies have shown that omega-3s may reduce the risk of several types of cancer by limiting chronic inflammation, while lignans in flaxseeds have demonstrated the ability to inhibit tumor growth in lab research.

The dietitian emphasizes that no single food guarantees protection against disease, but certain dietary patterns can significantly lower long-term risks. “It’s not about miracle cures,” she says, “it’s about giving the body the tools it needs to stay healthy.”

She recommends incorporating this cottage cheese and flaxseed oil mixture a few times per week as part of a balanced diet that includes vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and limited processed foods. She also advises consulting a healthcare professional before making major dietary changes, especially for individuals with existing health conditions.

As interest in functional nutrition continues to grow, simple combinations like this one serve as a reminder that powerful health tools are often found in the most basic ingredients.
