On Sunday, April 13, 2025, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred in central Myanmar, with its epicenter located approximately 43 kilometers northeast of Meiktila, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The quake struck at 2:25 UTC (9:55 local time) at a depth of 35 kilometers.
This tremor is one of the strongest aftershocks following the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that hit the region on March 28, resulting in over 3,600 deaths and more than 5,000 injuries.
There have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage from the latest quake. However, residents in nearby areas reported feeling the tremors, prompting many to evacuate buildings as a precaution.
The United Nations has expressed concern that the recent seismic activity may exacerbate the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, where a civil conflict has already displaced over 3 million people.
