On June 3, 2025, Elon Musk publicly denounced President Donald Trump’s proposed tax and spending bill, labeling it a ‘disgusting abomination.’ This criticism marks a significant departure from Musk’s previous role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the Trump administration.
In a series of posts on X, Musk expressed his frustration:
‘I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.’
He further warned that the bill would ‘massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) … American citizens with crushingly unsustainable …’
The legislation, known as the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act,’ aims to extend the 2017 tax cuts, introduce new tax breaks, and raise the federal debt ceiling by $4 trillion. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that the bill would add approximately $3.8 trillion to the federal government’s $36.2 trillion debt over the next decade.
Musk’s critique has found support among some Republican lawmakers, including Senators Rand Paul and Mike Lee, who have expressed concerns over the bill’s fiscal implications.
Despite the backlash, the White House remains steadfast in its support of the bill. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, ‘The president already knows where Elon Musk stood on … , beautiful bill, and he’s sticking to it.’
The bill has passed the House and is currently under consideration in the Senate, where it faces scrutiny from fiscal conservatives.
