In response to the United States’ declining birthrate, the Trump administration is evaluating a proposal to offer a $5,000 “baby bonus” to new mothers. This initiative aims to incentivize childbirth and bolster the nation’s population growth.
President Donald Trump expressed support for the concept, stating, “Sounds like a good idea to me,” when questioned about the proposal. Vice President J.D. Vance has also advocated for expanding the child tax credit, suggesting it should be increased to $5,000 per child.
The “baby bonus” is part of a broader set of pronatalist policies under consideration. Other proposals include allocating a portion of Fulbright scholarships to parents, establishing a “National Medal of Motherhood” for women with multiple children, and implementing government-funded reproductive education programs.
Critics argue that these measures may not effectively address the underlying factors contributing to the declining birthrate, such as high childcare costs, lack of paid family leave, and insufficient maternal health support.
