NOAA Confirms Strong Solar Flare Behind Ongoing Geomagnetic Disturbance

A major geomagnetic storm began striking Earth on May 17, and is expected to continue through May 19, according to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). The event follows an intense solar flare and a series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) launched from the Sun earlier this week.

What Triggered the Storm

The storm was caused by a powerful X2.7-class solar flare recorded on May 14, followed by high-speed plasma ejections that reached Earth’s magnetosphere within 48–72 hours. The source of the activity is sunspot region AR4087, which remains highly unstable and continues to emit strong solar flares.

According to NOAA, the geomagnetic storm reached G2 (moderate) intensity in its initial phase, disrupting radio frequencies and satellite signals in some parts of the world. Auroras, commonly restricted to Arctic latitudes, have been spotted much farther south—including in Michigan, Wisconsin, and parts of New York.

Potential Impacts in the U.S. The geomagnetic disturbance may lead to:

  • GPS signal degradation and navigation errors
  • High-frequency radio blackouts, especially for aircraft flying over polar regions
  • Power grid fluctuations in vulnerable infrastructure
  • Increased aurora visibility across northern U.S. states

Airlines and satellite operators have been advised to monitor space weather alerts. Northern states may also experience exceptional aurora borealis displays, visible even in populated areas under clear skies.

Solar Activity Still Rising

The storm is not over yet. Scientists at NOAA and NASA warn that active region AR4087 still shows strong potential for more solar eruptions in the coming days. The current probability of additional flares is estimated at 65% for M-class and 30% for X-class events.

If another flare is ejected toward Earth, the geomagnetic storm could intensify or extend beyond the initial May 19 forecast.

Health and Safety Tips

For those sensitive to geomagnetic changes—such as individuals with cardiovascular conditions—doctors recommend avoiding stress and staying hydrated. The general public is advised to stay informed through official channels like NOAA SWPC and the National Weather Service.

Watch for Northern Lights

If you’re located in the northern United States, this weekend may offer a rare opportunity to view the northern lights well outside their usual range. Skywatchers are encouraged to find dark, rural areas and look north after sunset.
