THE RISE OF “GRAY DIVORCE” WORLDWIDE: HOW IT AFFECTS ADULT CHILDREN

Divorces among older couples are rapidly increasing globally, with unexpectedly severe consequences for adult children, who experience shock, a loss of their familiar support system, and are forced to redefine their relationships with each parent.

Divorce in later life is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon, and researchers are beginning to study its unforeseen consequences for adult children. While past research primarily focused on the impact of divorce on young children, it is now clear that adults also find it painful—experiencing shock, a loss of their foundation, and even re-evaluating their own relationships.

In the U.S., about 36% of divorces now involve individuals over the age of 50, a significant jump from just 8.7% in 1990. A similar trend is being observed in other countries, including Korea and Japan.

Studies show that adult children often find themselves “caught in the middle,” supporting one parent while taking on the role of advisor and emotional pillar. Sociologists note that they find the loss of relationship boundaries and the weakening of contact with their fathers particularly difficult.

Psychologists point out that a “gray divorce” can impact the self-esteem, partner choice, and even family rituals of adult children. At the same time, mothers tend to maintain closeness with their children, while fathers are at a higher risk of social isolation.

Experts emphasize that while divorce in later life disrupts familiar family dynamics, it can also mark the beginning of a new chapter. Support from communities and open dialogue can help mitigate the consequences for both parents and their adult children.
