American stage and screen actress Diane Keaton died in California on October 11. She was 79.
Diane Keaton (whose birth name was Diane Hall) was born in Los Angeles in 1946. Early in her career, she attempted to perform under names like Dori and Kory Hall, as there was already a Diane Hall in the Actors’ Guild at the time, but the actress ultimately adopted her mother’s maiden name. It was as Diane Keaton that she made her Broadway debut in 1968. A year later, she starred in the Woody Allen production Play It Again, Sam.
Keaton made her film debut in 1970, starring in the comedy Lovers and Other Strangers. The actress gained widespread fame after Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Godfather (1972), where she played the role of Kay Adams. Diane Keaton is also known for her roles in the Woody Allen films Love and Death (1975) and Annie Hall (1977).
She won an Oscar for her role in Annie Hall. Keaton was also a recipient of Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards.
