On May 12, 2025, rapper Tory Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, was attacked by another inmate at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi. The assault occurred around 7:20 a.m. during morning yard time. Lanez sustained 14 stab wounds: seven to his back, four to his torso, two to the back of his head, and one to the left side of his face. The injuries led to both of his lungs collapsing, necessitating immediate medical attention. He was transported to a hospital in Bakersfield, where he was placed on a breathing apparatus. As of the latest updates, Lanez is breathing on his own and is in stable condition.
Lanez is currently serving a 10-year sentence for the 2020 shooting of fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion. He was convicted in December 2022 on charges including assault with a semiautomatic firearm, carrying a loaded and unregistered firearm, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. He is eligible for parole in 2029.
The motive behind the prison attack remains unclear, and authorities, including the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the Kern County District Attorney’s Office, are conducting an ongoing investigation.
