The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is currently reviewing a proposal for a reality television show titled “The American,” where immigrants would compete in various challenges for a chance at expedited U.S. citizenship. The concept, pitched by Canadian-born producer Rob Worsoff, known for his work on “Duck Dynasty,” has sparked significant controversy and debate.
According to the proposal, “The American” would feature 12 immigrant contestants embarking on a journey across the United States, starting from Ellis Island. Throughout the competition, participants would engage in tasks designed to test their knowledge of American history and culture, as well as physical challenges emblematic of American experiences—such as gold panning in San Francisco or assembling a Model T Ford in Detroit. The show would culminate in a final ceremony in Washington, D.C., where the winner would be granted U.S. citizenship. Notably, Worsoff emphasized that contestants who do not win would not face deportation or immigration penalties; instead, they might receive consolation prizes like airline miles or gift cards.
The proposal has elicited a range of reactions. Critics argue that turning the path to citizenship into a televised competition trivializes the seriousness of immigration and could be seen as exploitative. Comparisons have been drawn to dystopian narratives, with concerns about the ethical implications of such a format.
In response to reports suggesting that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem supported the project, DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin clarified that while the department receives numerous television show pitches annually, “The American” is merely in the early stages of review and has neither been approved nor rejected. McLaughlin also stated that Secretary Noem has not reviewed the proposal.
The emergence of this proposal occurs amid ongoing debates over U.S. immigration policies. While the Trump administration has taken a hardline stance on immigration, data indicates that deportations have occurred at a slower pace compared to previous administrations.
