Rolls-Royce Phantom Marks 100 Years as Pinnacle of Luxury and Innovation

One hundred years ago, Rolls-Royce introduced the “New Phantom” in January 1925, inaugurating one of the most enduring nameplates in automotive history. Throughout eight generations, the Phantom has consistently represented the brand’s flagship model—an icon of effortless luxury, engineering excellence, and bespoke craftsmanship.

To commemorate the centenary, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is celebrating with a year-long series of special events: unique “Phantom Dragon” and “Cherry Blossom” one-offs, cultural retrospectives at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and exhibitions showcasing Phantom’s influence in music and art. Each 2025 Phantom now includes a discreet centenary plaque as a mark of this milestone.

Since its introduction, the Phantom has served as a canvas for bespoke creation. Designed with coachbuilt precision by experts such as Barker, Park Ward, and Mulliner, early models offered near-limitless customization on chassis, interiors, and finishes. Iconic examples include the V12-powered Phantom III (1936–1939), the only V12 model before modern times, and the ultra-rare Phantom IV (1950–1956), built exclusively for royalty and heads of state.

In contemporary times, the Phantom remains unrivalled. The current eighth-generation Phantom (debuted in 2017) features advanced engineering such as the ‘Architecture of Luxury’ aluminum platform, twin-turbo V12 engine, coach doors, and the customizable “Gallery” dashboard—testament to its role as the ultimate luxury statement.

Beyond automotive design, the Phantom has permeated culture. It’s been the car of choice for celebrities and royalty, featured in music videos, and even inspired bespoke commissions such as the “Phantom Goldfinger,” a Bond-themed model celebrated for its 007-inspired flourishes and theatrical trunk accessories.

In summary, the Phantom’s centenary is not just a milestone—it’s a celebration of a century of influence on luxury, design, and culture. As Rolls-Royce steps into the next hundred years, the Phantom remains the undisputed embodiment of the brand’s promise: the best of the best, delivered in perfect silence and custom-crafted elegance.
