Wakuku replaces Labuba: a new era begins for designer toys

In a world where collectibles quickly transform from niche curiosities into viral sensations, China’s latest toy phenomenon — Wakuku — offers more than just a cute face. With its shaggy fur, bold unibrow, and fierce warrior aesthetic, Wakuku embodies a cultural moment that extends far beyond toy store shelves.

Released earlier this year by Shenzhen-based brand Letsvan, Wakuku has already eclipsed previous local sensations like Labubu. Its debut at Miniso Land in Beijing ignited an immediate buying frenzy, selling out within hours and boosting in-store revenue by nearly 90%. Follow-up releases in Shanghai and Nanjing vanished in under two hours, affirming that Wakuku is not a fleeting trend but a full-scale cultural force.

What makes Wakuku remarkable isn’t just its design — a fusion of softness and attitude that resonates with China’s Gen Z consumers — but what it represents for China’s place in global pop culture. Historically, designer toys and art collectibles have largely been dominated by Japanese and Western creators. China’s new generation of artists and toy makers, however, is rewriting that narrative with striking speed and ambition.

Beyond aesthetic appeal, Wakuku’s viral success is an economic indicator. In an era marked by cautious consumer spending, especially among young adults, Wakuku proves that scarcity, emotional connection, and social media hype can override broader financial anxieties. Videos of shoppers queuing overnight and collectors proudly displaying their finds have flooded Douyin and Xiaohongshu, turning Wakuku into both a personal treasure and a social currency.

As Wakuku’s influence grows, the question is no longer whether it will enter Western markets, but how quickly. If the past few months are any indication, this furry, unibrowed warrior might be making its way to American shelves sooner than we think.
