In a surprising turn of events, an 8-year-old boy from Lexington, Kentucky, named Liam, unintentionally ordered approximately 70,000 Dum-Dum lollipops via his mother’s Amazon account, resulting in a $4,200 charge. The incident occurred when Liam, who has fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), accessed his mother’s phone and placed the order without her knowledge.
Liam’s mother, Holly LaFavers, discovered the unexpected purchase after noticing a significant charge on her bank account. She immediately contacted Amazon, which advised her to reject the delivery to obtain a refund. Despite her efforts, 22 boxes of lollipops were delivered to her doorstep.
Seeking assistance, LaFavers turned to her community via Facebook. Neighbors, friends, local businesses, and even banks stepped in to purchase the surplus candy. Eventually, after media coverage and further discussions, Amazon agreed to issue a full refund.
LaFavers and Liam donated some of the lollipops to local institutions, including a church and school. Amazon expressed satisfaction in turning the situation into a positive outcome.
Reflecting on the experience, LaFavers advised other parents to secure their devices to prevent similar incidents. She also hopes that sharing her story will raise awareness about FASD, a condition that can affect children’s impulse control and understanding of consequences.
