A 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit southeastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, September 2, causing renewed fears of damage and casualties, Reuters reported.
The tremor came just days after a stronger earthquake in the same region killed over 1,400 people and injured thousands.
This latest quake occurred at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).
According to Safiullah Nurzai, a staff member at Aseel, a humanitarian technology platform, the aftershocks triggered panic and temporarily halted rescue operations as rocks tumbled down the mountains.
The difficult terrain continues to complicate relief efforts, particularly in isolated villages. Local residents reported that some homes already partially damaged by the previous earthquake were destroyed by the second quake.
