China has commissioned the world’s first mirror-solar power plant equipped with two towers, according to Petrocouncil.
The unique facility was built in the Gansu region and is capable of producing about 1.8 billion kWh of electricity per year, which is equivalent to providing energy to approximately 170,000 households.
The plant consists of 30,000 mirrors that focus sunlight onto two 200-metre spires. There, a special salt solution is heated, converted into steam and used to drive turbines that generate electricity.
The project is an important step for China in the development of renewable energy and demonstrates the country’s desire to reduce its dependence on traditional energy sources.
