Scientists have discovered that a combination of green tea and vitamin B3 can help the brain cleanse itself of harmful proteins and reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
A study published in the journal GeroScience found that epigallocatechin gallate (an antioxidant found in green tea) and nicotinamide (a form of vitamin B3) restore energy in brain cells. This energy is needed to remove protein clumps that are considered one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease.
The experiments were conducted on nerve cells from old mice with symptoms of the disease. After 24 hours of treating the cells with the compounds, the level of the key energy molecule GTP returned to values typical of young cells. This helped the cells more actively remove harmful proteins and old components.
Alzheimer’s disease occurs due to the accumulation of toxic proteins in the brain – amyloid and tau. They form plaques and tangles that prevent neurons from transmitting signals. Over time, this leads to cell destruction and loss of memory, speech, and the ability to care for oneself.
Researchers believe that using natural compounds available in supplements or through food may be a new way to combat age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease.
Experts emphasize that early diagnosis of the disease is essential, as modern treatments can slow its progression and alleviate symptoms.
