HOW MANY FRIENDS DOES A PERSON NEED? THE BRAIN LIMITS SOCIAL TIES

Scientists claim that despite the increasing number of contacts on social media, the human brain can only sustain a limited number of genuine relationships—about 150 people—with the quality of connections playing a key role over quantity.

Despite the capabilities of social networks, the human brain can only sustain a limited number of real relationships. Scientists still debate the exact number of friends a person should have. Professor Robin Dunbar of Oxford University believes that a person’s optimal “social network” does not exceed 150 individuals. According to him, this number includes five closest friends and family members, ten people you see at least once a month, 50 people invited to a birthday party, and the remaining 100 invited to a wedding, writes the Independent.

However, Dunbar’s theory is controversial. Swedish researchers note that comparing humans to primates, on which the professor’s conclusions are based, does not account for key differences: humans are no longer struggling for food or defending against predators like chimpanzees. Nevertheless, Dunbar maintains that social media hasn’t changed the essence of his theory, first published in 1993, and that the layers of social ties persist even in the digital space.

Health officials emphasize that the quality of connections is more important than their quantity. One true friend can significantly reduce the risks of loneliness and isolation. Earlier, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy warned that social isolation increases the risk of premature death by more than a quarter.
