Jet Slams into California Homes: Fires Break Out, FAA Investigates

On May 22, 2025, a Cessna Citation II private jet crashed into the Murphy Canyon neighborhood of San Diego, California, igniting fires in at least 15 homes and resulting in multiple fatalities among those on board. The incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. local time, near the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport, amidst dense fog conditions.

The aircraft, registered as N666DS and built in 1985, had originated from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, with a stopover in Wichita, Kansas, before heading to San Diego. Upon impact, the plane struck multiple homes and vehicles, creating a significant debris field and spreading jet fuel across the area. Assistant Fire Chief Dan Eddy described the scene as “a gigantic debris field,” emphasizing the challenges faced by emergency responders.

Emergency crews, including the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, responded promptly to the crash site. Fires engulfed several homes and vehicles, but firefighters managed to contain the blazes. Approximately 100 residents were evacuated from the area, with a temporary evacuation site established at Miller Elementary School. Despite the extensive property damage, no serious injuries were reported among residents on the ground.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have initiated an investigation into the crash. Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft was approximately 500 feet above ground level at its last radar check-in. Authorities are also examining whether the plane may have struck power lines during its descent.

The Murphy Canyon neighborhood, known for its military housing, suffered significant damage. Residents recounted being awakened by explosions and flames. One local, Jessica Schrader, described the harrowing experience of escaping her burning home with her children by climbing a neighbor’s fence. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl commended the swift actions of first responders in evacuating residents and preventing further casualties.

This tragic incident underscores the potential dangers of aviation accidents in residential areas. As investigations continue, authorities aim to determine the exact cause of the crash and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
