Shooting in New York: Four Dead, Gunman Dies by Suicide

A shooting at a high-rise on Park Avenue in New York left four people dead, including a police officer, two men, and a woman. According to police, the 27-year-old gunman took his own life on the 33rd floor of the building, which houses the offices of the National Football League (NFL) and major financial firms.

U.S. media identified the shooter as Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, who had no prior criminal record. He was armed with an M-4 rifle. He first opened fire in the lobby, where police officers engaged in a brief exchange of gunfire. He then fled upstairs, where his body was later found along with the weapon.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the shooter acted alone. Authorities discovered expired licenses for private security and firearms in his car. Preliminary findings show he entered New York the day before the attack, traveling through several states. Tamura was formerly a professional football player and reportedly had a history of mental health issues.

Witnesses described panic inside the building. Jessica Chen, an employee on the second floor, said she hid in a conference room and texted her parents, telling them she loved them. One person was injured and taken to the hospital. The officer who was killed was off duty and happened to be at the scene.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams urged residents to remain cautious. “We’re still piecing together what happened, but it’s clear how easy it is to obtain a firearm in this country,” he said during a press conference. The FBI has joined the investigation, which officials say is not being treated as terrorism, but rather an act by a lone, mentally unstable individual.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the incident “a horrifying act of violence” and expressed support for the NYPD and the victims’ families.

The investigation is ongoing. Despite the building’s high level of security, the attack exposed vulnerabilities in public safety that officials say must now be urgently addressed.
