Astronomers have reported the possible discovery of a galaxy that existed just 90 million years after the Big Bang. The object, called Capotauro, may be 200 million years older than the oldest known galaxy, MoM-z14.
The study was published on the arXiv preprint server, writes Daily Galaxy. Scientists have discovered an unusual red spot in the James Webb telescope images, the light from which has been traveling to us for more than 13.7 billion years. If this is indeed a galaxy, then it formed in an era when the Universe did not yet have a clear structure and was filled with hot gas.
Astronomers note that the supposed galaxy is too bright and massive for such an early stage in the history of space: its mass may reach a billion solar masses. This contradicts existing theories, according to which the formation of such structures requires hundreds of millions of years. The nature of the object will have to be finally confirmed during further observations. Scientists do not rule out that it may not be a galaxy, but another cosmic phenomenon.
