Advisers to Trump Say: Don’t Trust Putin. Act Now

As the war in Ukraine persists, President Donald Trump is encountering increasing pressure from within his administration to adopt a more stringent approach toward Russia. Senior officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Keith Kellogg, are urging the President to reconsider his current diplomatic strategy, especially in light of recent Russian military actions.

Advisors Advocate for Tougher Measures

In recent discussions at the White House, Rubio and Kellogg expressed concerns over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s intentions, advising caution in response to Moscow’s demands, particularly regarding territorial concessions from Ukraine. They emphasized the need for a firmer U.S. stance to counteract Russia’s aggressive maneuvers.

Despite these recommendations, President Trump continues to support Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who, after meetings with Putin, believes that the Russian leader is open to a peaceful resolution. Witkoff’s perspective has been met with skepticism by other officials who question the sincerity of Russia’s diplomatic overtures.

Impact of the Sumy Missile Strike

The internal debate intensified following a Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy, resulting in the deaths of at least 34 civilians and injuries to over 100 individuals. The attack, occurring on Palm Sunday, has been described by Kellogg as crossing “any line of decency,” highlighting the brutality of the ongoing conflict.

This incident has prompted renewed calls from within the administration for a reassessment of the U.S. approach to Russia, with some officials advocating for increased sanctions and a more confrontational posture.

Preparation for Enhanced Sanctions

In response to the evolving situation, the State Department and the Treasury are reportedly developing options for escalating economic sanctions against Russia. Former sanctions coordinator Daniel Fried indicated that these measures are being considered to provide the President with alternatives should he decide to adopt a tougher stance.

Republican Lawmakers Express Concern

Beyond the executive branch, Republican lawmakers supportive of Ukraine are voicing their concerns over the administration’s current policy. Figures such as Senator Lindsey Graham and Representative Michael McCaul have publicly condemned the Sumy attack and are urging President Trump to implement more robust measures against Russia.
