Charles Kushner Confirmed as U.S. Ambassador to France Amid Controversy

On May 19, 2025, the U.S. Senate confirmed Charles Kushner, a real estate developer and father of Jared Kushner, as the new U.S. Ambassador to France and Monaco. The confirmation passed narrowly with a 51–45 vote, reflecting bipartisan concerns over Kushner’s past criminal convictions and his close familial ties to President Donald Trump.

Kushner’s criminal history includes a 2005 conviction on 18 federal charges, such as tax evasion, witness tampering, and making false statements to the Federal Election Commission. He served 14 months in federal prison and was disbarred in multiple states. In December 2020, President Trump pardoned him during the final days of his first term.

During his confirmation hearing, Kushner acknowledged his past misconduct, stating, “I made a very, very, very serious mistake, and I paid a very heavy price for that mistake.” He emphasized that his experiences have provided him with insight and humility, which he believes will enhance his diplomatic service.

The confirmation vote saw Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey as the sole Democrat in favor, citing Kushner’s significant role in advancing the bipartisan First Step Act, a criminal justice reform bill. Booker highlighted Kushner’s advocacy for rehabilitation and his efforts to assist those affected by the criminal justice system.

Critics argue that Kushner’s appointment exemplifies nepotism within the Trump administration, noting the pattern of assigning key roles to family members and close associates. They also express concerns about his qualifications and the message his appointment sends regarding accountability and ethical standards in public service.

As Ambassador to France and Monaco, Kushner will be responsible for navigating complex diplomatic relationships, particularly amid ongoing tensions over trade policies and differing positions on international conflicts. He has pledged to strengthen bilateral ties and promote mutual interests between the United States and France.
