DHS Pressures Harvard Under Fire: DHS Demands Foreign Student Records

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has warned Harvard University that it could lose its authorization to host international students unless it submits disciplinary records for certain foreign nationals enrolled at the school.

In a letter sent to Harvard on April 16, DHS requested documentation related to what it described as “illegal and violent activities” involving some international students. The university has until April 30 to respond. If it fails to comply, it may lose access to the federal Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), which is required for issuing student visas.

The DHS has also canceled two grants worth $2.7 million and is reviewing more than $9 billion in federal grants and contracts connected to Harvard. In addition, $2.3 billion in funds have been frozen, and officials are reportedly considering whether to revoke the university’s tax-exempt status.

Harvard has acknowledged the request and stated that it is reviewing the matter.
