Tech billionaire Elon Musk has launched a public discussion on the possibility of forming a new political party in the United States. On Independence Day, he posted a poll on his X (formerly Twitter) account asking: “Do you want independence from the two-party (some say one-party) system? Should we create the ‘America Party’?”
According to Reuters, the poll will remain open for 24 hours. Within just a few hours, over 300,000 users had participated, with more than 62% supporting the idea of forming a new party. Musk added that a hypothetical “America Party” could aim to win 2–3 seats in the Senate and 8–10 seats in the House of Representatives in order to hold the balance of power in Congress.
Musk’s post drew wide attention, particularly amid his vocal criticism of the recently passed budget package known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” He called the bill “disgusting” and accused both major political parties of fiscal irresponsibility and allowing the national debt to spiral. According to Musk, both Democrats and Republicans act as a single system that no longer represents the majority of citizens.
“It’s not about left or right. It’s about returning representation to the people,” Musk wrote in a follow-up comment.
While previous efforts to form viable third parties in the U.S. have largely failed, some political analysts believe that Musk’s vast following and financial resources could give him a unique advantage—at least in selected districts.
