Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday accused U.S. President Donald Trump of lying about his intentions for peace and described the president’s latest statements as an embarrassment to the United States.
Khamenei’s remarks came in response to Trump’s announcement that the U.S. has submitted a nuclear agreement proposal to Iran, accompanied by a warning that Tehran should “move quickly or something bad will happen.”
Speaking to state media, Khamenei dismissed Trump’s comments as disingenuous and said, “He lied when he claimed he wanted peace.” He further stated that America’s actions and rhetoric continue to destabilize the region, adding, “The U.S. should leave the area.” Khamenei also warned that Washington’s aggressive posturing undermines diplomatic progress and reflects poorly on U.S. leadership.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also addressed the state of nuclear negotiations, criticizing what he described as Washington’s inconsistent positions. “The changes in U.S. stances are prolonging the talks,” he said. Iran and the United States have been engaged in indirect discussions over a revised nuclear deal, but recent escalations and conflicting statements have fueled uncertainty over the outcome.
Khamenei’s remarks underscore deepening tensions as both sides weigh the political and strategic costs of returning to a formal agreement.
