Migrant Crossings at U.S. Border Remain Low Amid Trump Crackdown

Unauthorized migrant crossings along the U.S.-Mexico border have remained at historically low levels for the third consecutive month, following a series of enforcement measures enacted by President Donald Trump.

Data released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) shows a significant drop in apprehensions and encounters since January, when the administration intensified efforts to curb illegal immigration. Officials credit stricter deportation protocols, expanded border patrol presence, and increased cooperation with Mexican authorities for the sustained decline.

According to CBP, total encounters in April fell by more than 40% compared to the same period last year. The agency also reported a reduction in repeat crossings, which had previously risen during periods of policy uncertainty.

The White House has emphasized border security as a central component of its immigration agenda, with Trump stating the administration’s goal is to “regain full operational control” of the southern border.

Critics have expressed concern over the humanitarian impact of the policies, including expedited removals and prolonged detentions. Immigration advocates say the drop in numbers does not reflect a solution to the root causes of migration, such as violence and poverty in Central America.

Despite ongoing legal challenges, the administration has vowed to continue tightening restrictions, including potential new agreements with regional governments.
