Putin and Xi Unite Against Western Sanctions in New Agreement

On May 8, 2025, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin convened in Moscow to sign a comprehensive joint statement aimed at deepening their strategic partnership. The agreement underscores a mutual commitment to countering U.S. influence and promoting a multipolar world order.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The joint statement emphasizes the expansion of cooperation across various sectors, including defense, energy, and technology. Both nations pledged to increase the use of their national currencies in bilateral trade, reducing dependence on the U.S. dollar. Additionally, Russia’s VEB development bank announced plans to fund joint projects with Chinese companies, totaling approximately $42 billion, in areas such as gas, metallurgy, and shipbuilding.

Unified Stance on Global Issues

Xi and Putin presented a united front against what they described as U.S. “unilateralism” and “bullying.” They criticized Western sanctions and expressed opposition to the perceived revision of World War II history by other nations. The leaders also reaffirmed their positions on Taiwan and Ukraine, with Russia supporting China’s claim over Taiwan and both nations calling for addressing the “root causes” of the Ukraine conflict.

Symbolic Timing and Participation

Xi’s visit coincided with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. His presence at the event, alongside other international leaders, signified China’s support for Russia amid ongoing tensions with the West. During the celebrations, both leaders emphasized their countries’ roles in defeating fascism and condemned attempts to undermine their historical contributions.

Future Collaborations

The joint statement outlines plans for further collaboration in various fields, including aerospace, artificial intelligence, and infrastructure development. Both nations aim to enhance connectivity through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative and the Eurasian Economic Union. They also agreed to promote cultural exchanges and strengthen ties between their citizens.
