Thailand’s military has announced its readiness to launch a ‘high-level military operation’ if Cambodia violates its national sovereignty. The statement comes amid escalating tensions following the death of a Cambodian soldier during a border clash on May 28.
In an official message released Thursday evening, the Thai military said that despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, intelligence reports suggest Cambodia has increased its military presence along the shared border. This activity was described as ‘alarming.’
‘The military is prepared to conduct a high-level military operation if needed to respond to any sovereignty breach,’ the statement said. It was issued ahead of a scheduled meeting of Thailand’s top military leadership. The army also emphasized that actions at the border are being taken ‘with caution and restraint,’ but that it stands ready to ‘fully protect the sovereignty of the nation.’
Earlier in the day, the Thai government called on Cambodia to engage in constructive dialogue through established diplomatic channels. However, the military’s tone was noticeably firmer than previous official statements.
Historically, the two nations have disputed several segments of their border, particularly near the Preah Vihear temple. The International Court of Justice ruled in 2013 that the land around the temple belongs to Cambodia, a decision Thailand has not officially accepted. This week, Cambodia proposed taking disputes over four key border sections to the international court and urged Thailand to cooperate.
As of now, Cambodia has not issued an official response to Thailand’s latest military statement.
