Former U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly halted a planned Israeli military strike on Iranian nuclear sites earlier in his current term. According to The New York Times, Israel had prepared for an attack in May that aimed to delay Iran’s nuclear capabilities by at least a year.
The plan required U.S. cooperation for operational support and defense. Trump ultimately chose not to authorize the plan. Instead, his administration began direct diplomatic talks with Iran, with the first meeting taking place in Oman last Saturday.
Officials from both the United States and Iran described the talks as “positive.” A second round of discussions is expected soon, possibly in Rome.
